Daily Devotional - August 19th Christ, The Wisdom Of God! “But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.” 1Corinthians 1:24 The lowest step of Jesus humiliation and the consummation of His sufferings was His death but it eminently contributed to His design for our redemption. It not only expiated the guilt of sin, and pacify the conscience by making plenary satisfaction to the divine justice; but did eminently contribute to the killing of sin in us, Romans 6:6 & 8:3 and by being a sacrifice for sin condemned sin in the flesh. The death of Christ exposes sin to be a great evil and condemns it because the impartial justice of God severely punished it in His own Son when He appeared in the person of a sinner. The most powerful of arguments to crucify sin is that it crucified Christ. The idea so innocent and holy a person as Christ should suffer such a cruel and ignominious death for our sins, should forever set us against it, and makes us hate it with a perfect hatred. Such wisdom is too wonderful for me. The circumstances of His suffering are with admirable wisdom fitted for the conquering of sin and Satan. Sin came by the woman; the seed of the woman suffers for sin and He by suffering conquers it. Sin began in the garden: and there Jesus began His sufferings for sin. By a tree sin came and Christ, The Wisdom Of God, bears the curse of it in hanging upon the tree, and crucifies it by His cross. As He conquered sin He overcame Satan by His own acts. The Devil found Christ in the likeness of a man, judged him mortal, and his great design was to procure his death, and get him into his grave. Jesus permits him to bring about his design, He lets him enter into Judas, lets the Jews crucify and put Him into his grave and roll a great stone upon it: It is here His divine wisdom appears in ruining the Devil by his own design, snaring him in the works of his hands. By death Christ destroys he that had the power of death that is the Devil. There is nothing in Jesus sufferings unbecoming the wisdom of God or improper to the end and design of Christ coming into the world for they served a further end which the wisdom of this world could not dream of, the satisfying of divine justice.
