Daily Devotional: New Altars 2 Kings 16:15 “…On the large new altar, offer the morning burnt offering…Sprinkle on the altar all the blood of the burnt offerings and sacrifices. But I will use the bronze altar for seeking guidance.” Ahaz decided to worship God on a new altar he had made as a copy of an altar he had seen used by the king of Assyria. In essence, he switched God’s altar and began worshiping idols. When we sacrifice the best of what we have to idols of success, materialism, security and health, we exchange the glory of God for idols made by men. Ahaz, however, continued to seek God’s guidance on the altar God had instructed his people to make. Can we give our best to other gods (which don’t speak), but still seek the living God for counsel? If we think we can do that, we have reduced God to a servant of ours and we have committed blasphemy. When our prayer life is focused on getting God’s help or direction, but the best of resources and time is invested in ourselves, we mirror the sins of Ahaz. Father, I offer myself to you as a living sacrifice on the altar of worship to your name.
