Daily Email Affirmations by Stillinger Family Funeral Home ________________________________________ You Can’t Avoid It – and You Shouldn’t - Day #137 It’s common knowledge that loss is everywhere around us. Consider the phrase, ‘in the midst of life, we are in death.” It’s fortunate for us that we can’t see the myriad number of creatures, microscopic and macroscopic, dying around us every single moment of our days. While we don’t mourn the death of the housefly on the window pane, we do grieve for many other losses in life. And, it’s that grief which makes the experience of happiness so much sweeter. After all, we’ve got to have contrast; daylight is more welcome because of the deep darkness of night. The warmth of the summer sun stands in stark contrast to the chill of winter. You’ll never be able to avoid loss and sorrow. Because of that, you are more able to experience the happy moments which will inevitably come to you. The one cannot exist without the other. Activity of the Day Every morning I start my day with a few lines in my Gratitude Journal. I wrote about it in an earlier affirmation; it’s a lovely book where I write those things I’m thankful for; and believe me, when I started, the statements were short, and rather odd: “I’m thankful for this pen,” and “I’m grateful for the trees in my yard.” Take out your journal, and make a gratitude entry for today. Guess what I will write in mine today? “I’m grateful for the opportunity to touch hearts with those who are lost in sorrow.” Quotation for the Day “To spare oneself from grief at all cost can be achieved only at the price of total detachment, which excludes the ability to experience happiness” ~ Erich Fromm
