Daily Fitness Tip - Thanksgiving doesn’t HAVE to be a caloric disaster - Part 2 The main food staples of Thanksgiving are quite healthy really… we just eat too much of them or doctor them up in such a way that make our arteries hate us (or both). But we can still eat healthy without compromising flavor. Where mashed potatoes get you in trouble is if you add stick after stick of butter or a bunch of cream (or both). Try adding greek yogurt instead (or use half yogurt and half the butter). Also, keep the skins on! They are a good source of fiber, vitamin C, iron, and copper, among other things. Opting for sweet potatoes also a fantastic option. They are lower on the glycemic index (read fewer blood sugar spikes) and have more vitamins. And since they’re already sweet, they REALLY don’t need the added richness of marshmallows and gobs of butter. Try roasting your sweet potatoes with a drizzle of olive oil and some thyme, rosemary, pepper, and Himalayan salt. It’s a wonderful, earthy and hardy compliment to your not-fried turkey.
