Daily Horror Overdose #28 3 more days til Halloween - Halloween - Halloween 3 more days til Halloween Silver Shamrock!... Wow, it stinks that Ive fallen so far behind making posts, especially since this is the week of Halloween! Im going to do my best to make up for it today, so keep your eyes peeled (literally!) for the Wacky Wednesday H.O.D. #29, and not far behind that, #30! Lets talk about creepy vintage TV shows. Ill name 3 - The Outer Limits, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Twilight Zone. I grew up with these shows in rerun fashion, which correct me if Im wrong, reruns are no longer referred to as such. I think the term syndication took over. Maybe people still call them reruns, but its a term I havent heard used in some time. It reminds me of the Whats a rerun? joke when Marty McFly was stuck in 1955 in Back to the Future. If what I said above about reruns is true, the irony here is there apparently are no reruns in the future either! Pardon my digression. Back on track now. I never got to see any of the shows above when they originally aired, but a lot of the episodes packed a lot of spooky moments in a 30 minute window, for sure. I remember my Mom, who was lucky enough (I suppose lucky isnt the word she would use) to see these shows air when she was a kid, and was creeped out many a long night. Her favorite of the three was Alfred Hitchcock Presents. I dont really think she cares for the other two. Too gross would probably be her words to describe them. Im pretty sure she found some of the visuals on The Twilight Zone too much, and this is where I culled todays OD source material from. During the first season of The Twilight Zone, the opening music was ominous, and brooding. Just something used to make you feel uneasy, and aware that something may be lurking in the shadows. When Season Two comes along, though, the new theme is, something was in the shadows, and now has you in its cold icy grasp! Next to Bernard Herrmanns Psycho soundtrack score, this was the scariest theme music put alongside the visuals of cinema at the time, Id wager, and still creepy to this very day. The Overdose of the day comes to you via The Ventures. Surf rock in its its own right can be creepy for sure, but when its themes are infused with horror, it comes off quite effective. Heres a little something that may alert the hairs on the back of your neck. Be sure to give it a spin right before bedtime! youtu.be/xBe1C0SOqzk
