Daily Inspiration - A Message Preached by One of My Christian Brothers at our last Sunday Church Service Hot Water, But Holy Ways That Characterize Us In Times Of Trouble Please read Matthew, passage 8:18-27 before reading through my summary of his message. People Want to Follow Jesus 18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he told his followers to go to the other side of the lake. 19 Then a teacher of the law came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, I will follow you any place you go.” 20 Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes to live in, and the birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to rest his head.” 21 Another man, one of Jesus’ followers, said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the people who are dead bury their own dead.” Jesus Calms a Storm 23 Jesus got into a boat, and his followers went with him. 24 A great storm arose on the lake so that waves covered the boat, but Jesus was sleeping. 25 His followers went to him and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We will drown!” 26 Jesus answered, “Why are you afraid? You don’t have enough faith.” Then Jesus got up and gave a command to the wind and the waves, and it became completely calm. 27 The men were amazed and said, “What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” 1. The test: The sea of Galilee vs 18, 23, 24 2. The temptations: The unholy ways the disciples reacted vs 25, 26 3 The trust and triumph vs 26, 27 4 Applications for daily life Our water involving troubles, trials, and problems may be hot, but our ways must be holy! There are five principles, or holy ways, that need to characterize us in times of trouble. P-1: Holy Way #1 - Recognize that it is not our Right to select our weather. P-2: Holy Way #2 - Recognize that we, as the Lords disciples, will not be excluded from the storms (hot water) of life. P-3: Holy Way #3 - Recognize that we can see the Lord calm the storm if we will go to Him immediately. P-4: Holy Way #4 - Recognize that all storms are under His control and that what He permits and for how long, and that all are always for our good. P-5: Holy Way #5 - Never doubt in the darkness of any storm (hot water) what God has shown us in the light of calmer seas. 5. Key Question/s: To know the power of the anchor (Jesus Christ), you must feel the power of the storm!! God responds to faith. How do you demonstrate that He is able? He is willing to help if we only ask Him. We do not need to exclude Jesus from any area of life! God can meet every need! Nothing is too hard for the Lord! He can heal the sick! Calm the storm! And raise the dead! How often do you cast your every care on him? Related passages: 1 Peter 5:7 7. Give all your worries to him, because he cares about you. Matthew 28:20 20. Teach them to obey everything that I have taught you, and I will be with you always, even until the end of this age.” Related Hymn: Hiding in Thee 1. O safe to the Rock that is higher than I, My soul in its conflicts and sorrows would fly; So sinful, so weary, Thine, Thine, would I be; Thou blest Rock of Ages, Im hiding in Thee. 2. In the calm of the noontide, in sorrows lone hour, In times when temptation casts over me its power; In the tempests of life, on its wide, heaving sea, Thou blest Rock of Ages, Im hiding in Thee. 3. How often in the conflict, when pressed by the foe, I have fled to my Refuge and breathed out my woe; How often, when trials like sea billows roll, Have I hidden in Thee, O Thou Rock of my soul. Chorus: Hiding in Thee, Hiding in Thee, Thou blest Rock of Ages, Im hiding in Thee.
