Daily Lectionary Devotion Mark 15:1-15 April 9, 2014 The Time Has Come Jesus stands before Pilate. He asks, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus responds with, “You have said so.” That’s all that Mark records, four simple words. The time has come for Jesus to be crucified and he knows it. No matter what he says, they are going to nail him to the tree. Barabbas or Jesus? To us it’s a no brainer! Let Jesus go! On my trip to the Holy Land we went to the believed location where Pilate questioned Jesus. It was a small courtyard. It certainly would not have been a big crowd yelling “Crucify Him!” Yet no matter the size of the crowd, Luther says, “The Jews and Pilate, however, were our God’s chisels, picks, and stone mallets, which He used to polish this Stone so that He might lay the foundation of His new temple” (AE 20:219). God used Pilate, the Jewish leaders and the crowd for the good of the whole world. For without Barabbas being let go and the “Crucify Him” of Jesus, there would be no forgiveness for us!
