Daily Lectionary Devotion Mark 15:16-32 April 10, 2014 Crucifixion “Stricken, Smitten, and afflicted, See Him dying on the tree! `Tis the Christ by man rejected; Yes, my soul, `tis He, `tis He! `Tis the long expected Prophet, David’s Son, yet David’s Lord; Proofs I see sufficient of it; `Tis the true and faithful Word” (Lutheran Service Book pg 451). This is one of my mom’s favorite hymns and over the years it has become one of mine. You can hear the nails piercing Jesus flesh; the pain and anguish of Jesus is felt as the haunting melody is matched with words of Jesus anguish. How could such a hymn of suffering become a favorite? Simply put, in Jesus crucifixion is our freedom from bondage. “Stricken, Smitten and Afflicted,” are words of victory for Jesus and for you!
