Daily Manna, DCLM Tuesday, December 09, 2014 TOPIC: Day of Atonement TEXT: LEVITICUS 23:23-32 Key Verse: “Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD” (Leviticus 23:27). When we think of atonement, we are apt to think only of what man gains. We must remember what it cost God and His dear Son to redeem man. Let us not forget that the crucifixion of Christ was indeed intended to be for all. It was the most significant exhibition of the love of God. The atonement, for which the cross is the symbol, is wholly ethical in its implications. On the cross, mercy and truth met together, righteousness and peace embraced each other. The blowing of the trumpets represented the preaching of the gospel through which men are called to repentance and to accept the salvation of Christ which was signified by the Day of Atonement. The sound of trumpets at the beginning of the year was meant to call Israelites to shake off spiritual drowsiness and amend their ways. In the atonement, God has revealed to humanity His saving love. He does not wish to condemn the world but to save it through His Son. The sinner must recognise that he is living under a sentence of death, awaiting the coming judgment. The sinner must look to Jesus as bearing the just penalty for sin on the cross. The sinner must trust that God has accepted this sacrifice on his behalf by raising Jesus from the dead (Romans 10:9). When a sinner abandons all hope of his righteousness before God and trusts in the provision of God in the death and resurrection of Jesus, he finds refuge in Christ. The sinner is now at peace with God. In fact, he is now a ‘new creature’ because Jesus died for the world. The activity of the church should reflect the harmonious result of the atonement. Similarly, mature believers are to be careful not to offend weaker believers, for whose sake Christ died. Instead, believers are to bear with one another, forgiving one another just as God also forgave them in Christ. Thought for the Day: In the atonement, God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself ***Share your thoughts and what youve just learnt in the comments section below. Dont forget to SHARE!
