Yes, be a friend, and listen at times, and give help, support, and encouragement when necessary. But then, there are those who will over burden you needlessly, stating the same things over and over, and enjoying their misery. That is when you have to set a limit and say, “No more. I have heard this same thing over and over, and I don’t want to hear any more. You have a problem, but instead of talking about it, fix it. I am your friend, but you are abusing our friendship. You are overburdening me with your problems, and I can’t allow it any longer.” A true friend will understand what you are saying, and apologize, but a user and non-friend will get angry and go out of your life. A true friend will stay, and the relationship will strengthen. A false friend will leave and you will be better off without them. Just be honest with them. You have a right to protect yourself from harm, and all negativity, and especially from negative people. Always love and respect yourself enough to be true to yourself.
