Daily Nation. How many people can fit in Uhuru Parks arena? Uhuru Park cannot hold 1m people. During the 2002 swearing in of President Kibaki, political rallies n the just concluded baba welcome rally, mammoth crowds have been witnessed in Uhuru Park. But the largest number that can fit there is about 60,000, contrary to what politicians made us believe. According to the 2009 census, Nairobi had 3.1m people (toddlers-wazees). To get 1m in Uhuru park, 1 in every 3 Nairobians must show up. Is that possible? No. Even if they are ferried from outside Nairobi. An average human being uses 0.5m X 0.25m=0.125m squared while standing. Therefore, 1m people wud take 125,000m sqrd which is =12.5ha (abt 31 acres). That is equal to the total area of Uhuru Park from Uhuru Highway to Afya hse -without buildings, trees n those man-made dams. So 1m people to stand shoulder to shoulder in 31 acres of land. How abt queuing? On Uhuru Highway, there are 8 lanes. Each is 3.5m wide. That makes 28m tarmarc. Allowing 0.5m per person, we can fit 56 people across the highway. (shoulder to shoulder). Thus we shall have 18,000 rows of people. Now each row needs 0.25m space to fit a person, that makes 4,500m or 4.5km long. Uhuru Highway is 3km from Nyayo Stadium to Museum hill. So the 1m people might need to go up to Westlands or beyond to make 4.5km. So, when u hear there was 1m people in a rally in Uhuru park, know that is a lie.
