Daily Report for Tuesday, September 23, 2014 *Enterovirus in Wood County *Ohio Voters Warned of Phone Scam *OU Hosts Writers Harvest The Centers for Disease Control confirmed that four cases of Enterovirus EV-D68 have been reported – including children from Wood, Wirt, and Greenbrier counties. The respiratory illness has been found in 20 states. State health officials said mild symptoms of EV-D68 could include fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough and body aches. Those with asthma may have trouble breathing. They advise frequent hand washing to prevent the virus, covering coughs and sneezes and getting a flu shot this year. (WV Metronews) A homeless man was arrested and then posted bond Monday after officials tied him to the theft of narcotics from the VCA Animal Clinic on Dudley Avenue. 29 year old Justin Wade Carmichael allegedly took valium, ketamine, fentanyl, hydromorphone and needles from the animal clinic along with 35 year old Bethany Watson of St. Mary’s who was employed there. Carmichael was found in an unresponsive state from an apparent drug overdose last Wednesday. He was revived at Camden Clark and released. (News and Sentinel) County Election Boards in southeast Ohio are warning voters of a telephone scam being reported in the area. Residents have reported receiving calls from a blocked toll-free number requesting their voter information and advising them to send in an absentee application. Guernsey County BOE director Sandra Miller said it is illegal for election officials to request voter information over the phone – all correspondence must be completed in person or by mail. Anyone receiving suspicious calls should report the call to authorities. (AVC) Ohio University police are looking for six suspects after one student was robbed early Sunday morning. It happened on campus around 2 am. The victim was walking on the South Green when he was jumped by six college age white males. He was struck, knocked to the ground, and kicked suffering injuries to his eye and knee. Suspects made off with his wallet. (WOUB) Vienna police are searching for a man who stole $2,000 in electronics from Walmart over the weekend. The suspect was observed on surveillance camera. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police at (304) 295-8563. (TheNewsCenter) Authorities in Mason County have released the name of a victim who died in a Saturday morning crash. 70 year old Juanity Sue Wilson of Frazier’s Bottom was killed when another vehicle struck her UTV on Ashton-Upland Road. (WV Metronews) Tonight in Athens, Ohio Universitys Creative Writing Program will present Writers Harvest, a benefit for hunger relief, at 7:30 p.m. in the Walter Hall Rotunda. Proceeds from the $5 (suggested) admission will benefit the Southeastern Ohio Food Bank. A book signing and reception will follow. Writers Harvest will feature OU professor of poetry and award-winning author Mark Halliday and nationally acclaimed fiction writer Donald Ray Pollock.
