Daily Thought - September 29, 2013 / Gândul zilei - 29 septembrie 2013 Can We Buy the Kingdom of God? All our efforts in this life should be made to gain the Kingdom of God. For us as Christians, the things of this world should not be a reason for concern or a motive to worry. There is only one thing about which we should be concerned, and that is the Kingdom of God. Jesus promised us: “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all this things shall be yours as well” (Matthew 6:36). This truth is taught to us by the Lord in a few parables of the Kingdom. In The Parable of the Hidden Treasure, the Lord compares the Kingdom of God with a treasure hidden in a field. The Lord said: “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field” (Matthew 13:44). This man was so concerned with the treasure that he found that he went out and sold everything he had in order to buy the field. He realized that the most valuable thing was the hidden treasure in the field, the Kingdom of God. All the things that he had, were of less value than the treasure. In another parable, Jesus compares the Kingdom with a pearl of great price. The Lord said “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it”(Matthew 13:45-46). The merchant in this parable does the same thing; he sells everything he has in order to purchase the great pearl. In these parables the Lord illustrates the use of material resources to obtain the Kingdom of God, of using money to buy the Kingdom. The question for us might be how we can use our material resources to gain the Kingdom of God? The answer is very simple. We can use our resources for doing good deeds, for helping the poor, for helping with God’s mission on earth, His church. So, can we also buy the Kingdom of God with money? Yes, we can. It is a good thing to use our talents or gifts given to us by God in order to make the Kingdom of God our unique and ultimate goal. ~Fr. Cornel Todeasa
