Daily Thoughts from our First Lady, Shelly Hurst-Goldrich Sunday, October 6 “Faith and Prayer are the vitamins of the soul; man cannot live in health without them.” --Mahalia Jackson, the most powerful contralto in Gospel music, Jackson is dubbed the ‘Queen of Gospel’ for her skill in gospel expression. Actor/Entertainer Harry Belafonte loved her and felt that her vocal interpretation of gospel music was profound. In 1950, Joe Bostic produced the ‘Negro Gospel and Religious Music Festival’ at Carnegie Hall. At that festival, Jackson was the first gospel singer to perform at that esteemed venue. Her most famous performance was at the March on Washington in 1963 where she sang before a crowd of 250,000 ‘How I Got Over’ and ‘I’ve been ‘Buke’d and I’ve been scorned’. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” --The Gospel of Matthew 4:4, which means in Hebrew “gift of Yahweh”. The disciple left behind a life of wealth and security for uncertainty to follow Jesus, the Christ. The Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington D. C. named him the Patron Saint of Civil Servants because of his public work. Of note, the funeral mass for the late President John F. Kennedy was celebrated at The Cathedral on November 25, 1963.
