Daily Times - Leading News Resource of Pakistan - Mango export of 175,000T likely this season * Around 4,200 tonnes of fruit exported by air, sea By Tanveer Sher KARACHI: The mango export has been advancing at a brisk pace and by the end of the season around August 2013 stakeholders are anticipating accomplishment of ambitious goal of 175,000 metric tonnes. According to leading exporters of one of the most demanding fruit of the summer season, since the start of the export season from May 25 they have dispatched around 4,200 metric tonnes of the quantity both by air and sea freight. According to Waheed Ahmed Chairman All-Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Importers Exporters and Merchants Association (APFVIEMA) the ongoing momentum was likely to gain further pace by the mid of the current month when bulk quantity of the fruit from growing areas of Sindh interior would start finding ways over the country. Current speed of arrival is also satisfactory but during the next three to four weeks it may further hasten up before culmination of the arrival of fruit, which would be followed by mango from Punjab. He attributed the expeditious pace of mango export owing to start of the export process simultaneously across the country on a given date viz Saturday May 25, which was accorded approval by the Federal Commerce Ministry. The objective of the decision was mainly on account of avoiding losses through unplanned and premature export of the fruit as witnessed during previous years. Majority of the mango was exported to number of European and Gulf countries included Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, UK and Germany where demand of Pakistani mango is growing over the period of time. About exporting the fruit to new destinations across the globe he informed this year South Korea, Mauritius and Australia have emerged as the countries, which may import Pakistani mango. There were some quarantine problem with Australian importers, which were resolved and there stand strong prospects the importers from the country may place huge orders during the current season. Australia itself was regarded as major mango producing country but currently winter season is on and in view of large population of Pakistani immigrants having great inclination towards Pakistani fruit, the export orders are expected very soon, which may spell good fortune for Pakistani farmers, growers and exporters alike. He said South Korea was also a very rewarding market for Pakistani fruits where importers were inclined for value addition products. He said owing to low charges of sea freight, many exporters in view of growing demand of the fruit have opted to send their products through this mode of transportation, which also includes UK and some EU countries.
