Daily Tip: Travelling. Low carb diets can be a bit of an issue when on the move. As soon as you get to airports or train stations you are in a high carb zone – surrounded by sandwiches, rolls, crisps, etc. Of course, if you can get to a restaurant, you’re usually fine (the Giraffes on Heathrow are more than happy to cater for you), but most of the meal deals and snacks in the likes of Boots or WH Smith are high carb. The best thing to do is to think ahead and take your own food, but this is not always possible. When I’m in this situation, its often nuts that come to my rescue, and I allow myself to have a little more than the “good handful” as I’m not having anything else. Salads are OK, but watch the hidden carbs in the dressings, croutons, etc. Most in-flight food is no good, so it’s a good idea to time your binge day if you are doing long-haul. Another alternative is to go without and use the time as an excuse for a mini-fast. You won’t do yourself any harm and now you are keto-adapted, your blood sugar shouldn’t drop too low. I travel a lot, so I have worked out all sorts of coping strategies and know the airport food shops inside out. So, probably not the best advice in the world, but the best solution is to eat plenty before you leave and take your own food with you.
