Daily Training Wizdum: Strength training, endurance training and fat loss. I like lifting heavy stuff. I also like being trim. Do the two have to be mutually exclusive? Nope. Research seems to indicate that the primary factor to take into account when trying to lose fat is a caloric deficit - i.e. consume less calories than youre presently shoveling into your pie hole. Having said that however, engaging in strength/hypertrophy type of training has a muscle mass sparing effect on the body, the implication being that body composition will change for the better. Engaging in excessive endurance type training during a caloric deficit generally results in a loss of both fat and muscle mass, which in non-scientific jargon is no bueno. Solution? Start out with 3 days of resistance based training and add some cardio in the mix as your schedule permits if your goal is to improve body composition.
