Dakota and Denver, the North Carolina Zoo’s prairie dogs are breaking in their new “digs”. Today the prairie dogs explored their new “dig” box which was made by volunteers. In the wild, prairie dogs create elaborate underground tunnels, made by digging out and pounding their head into dirt walls to pack it down. These tunnel systems are called “towns,” and include separate chambers for sleeping, food storage, nurseries and even toilets. Dakota and Denver only make appearances at the zoo during some animal encounters which are held Thur-Sun 11 a.m. & 1:45 p.m. in kidZone, as well as private opportunities such as: birthday parties, scout badge programs, zoo snoozes, classroom programs, home school programs and other on/off site special programming.
