Photo/Jeremy Russell/OHHDL DHARAMSHALA, September 11: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama, currently in Latvia on a ten-day Europe tour, on Tuesday met with Latvian Parliamentarians. During the meeting, the Tibetan leader highlighted the importance of Tibet’s environment, Tibetan Buddhist culture, human rights and religious freedom, and Tibet as a buffer zone for China and India. “Your experience accords with our experience. When it comes to the power of truth and the power of the gun, the gun may prove more effective in the short term, but in the long run the power of truth will prevail, ” His Holiness said. Photo/Igor/Save Tibet Russia “We are committed to remaining part of the PRC, which could be of benefit in modernizing Tibet. However, we have our own language, which we love the way you love Latvian. It is also the best language for explaining the subtleties of Buddhist philosophy,” Dalai Lama noted. “Our aim is the establishment of genuine Tibetan autonomy, as mentioned in the Chinese constitution. What we are asking is that they implement it,” the Nobel laureate added. The Latvian Parliamentarians affirmed to continue their support to preserve Tibetan culture and identity, and thanked the Tibetan leader for his visit. Earlier in the day, His Holiness participated in a round-table discussion on ‘The Path to Peace and Happiness in a Global Society’. His Holiness said, “In today’s global society there are no longer any real boundaries. For example, climate change is something that affects all human beings wherever they are. Our artificial emphasis on ‘them’ and ‘us’ prepares the ground for violence and war.” His Holiness the Dalai Lama will travel to Vilnius, Lithuania, later today. Photo/Jeremy Russell/OHHDL During his ten-day tour of Europe, he is scheduled to visit Czech Republic and Germany during which he will give public talks and teachings. The Tibetan leader will also participate in a Human Rights Forum in Prague alongside Burmese democracy icon and fellow Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. The Human Rights Forum was started by the late Czech President and Velvet Revolution icon Vaclav Havel and American Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel in 1997.
