Dale Bass nominated me for the 10 book challenge. Here are the rules: in your status, list 10 books that stayed with you in some way. Dont think too hard. They dont have to be the right books or great books of literature, just ones that affected you in some way. So here goes: 1. One Monster After Another and Professor Wormbog in Search for the Zipperump-a-zoo - A childhood favourite, some of the drawings were so detailed that I always kept looking to find one more hidden message. This would later become the first part of my career. 2. The Lord of the Rings - I adored the mysterious art on my parent’s unused boxed set of The Lord of the Rings before I even read the books. That anticipation didn’t quite live up to the reality. But anticipation is a powerful thing. 3. The Stranger - Albert Camus’s masterpiece has been on my mind since I first read it in Grade 12. I hated it then. But, as I’ve come to understand Camus and absurdism more, I’ve found a growing desire to reread it. 4. All The President’s Men - The reporting techniques used in this book made me feel humble and not alone. 5. The Little Prince - Big messages come in small bottles. 6. The Republic - The dialectic as a learning process - a method I use in my own teaching. 7. Gateway - A space prospector, a computer psychologist and, in my opinion, an interesting examination of masculinity. 8. The Chrysalids - On the nature of cliques and being the other. 9. The Belgariad - I constantly re-read this series. I have no idea why. 10. Continental Divide - My country is the country I always thought it was…unfortunately. And two bonuses: 11. Constitutional Law of Canada - Stuff not fluff. Those who took Ron Cheffins’s course at UVic will get my reference. 12. Our World and Our Universe - I loved these two National Geographic books until they broke. I’m supposed to tag ten people to take the same challenge. But I’d rather just tag: Jacquelyn Holman, Milena Radzikowska, Dermod Travis, Kat Eschner, Laura Jane and Keane Gru. And yes Milena, I will get to the gratitude challenge. This was just easier.
