Damaging storm leaves a Thanksgiving Day cleanup CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – One day after the storm, people all across western Massachusetts, even the rest of New England are spending part of their Thanksgiving cleaning up the damage. 22News visited some of the homes hit hardest by the pre-Thanksgiving Day storm. “I think we’re in for a long winter,” said Michael Wright of Chicopee. Wednesday’s snow storm left a lot of damage behind. Tens of thousands lost power all across western Massachusetts last night. Chicopee Residents dealt with downed wires all Thanksgiving Day. It’s not just inconvenient, it’s dangerous. “Especially with the guys that are plowing and stuff, those trucks are pretty tall and there’s a lot of snow right there. That’s where the wire is hanging. So definitely need to get this picked up,” Wright told 22News. That’s why drivers need to be extra cautious on the roads. Even though streets have been plowed, you’ll want to watch for wires hanging low because they’re coated with ice. It’s not just downed power lines, strong winds caused trees to come crashing down all across western Massachusetts. Wind combined with all that heavy wet snow to split this tree in half in Chicopee. You’re urged to check YOUR trees, to look for any cracked or weak limbs. “Especially tree branches now the way the storm has been a lot of these trees are really getting delicate. They’ve gotten ripped apart by the storms and the tornado we had before,” said Richard Klepach of Springfield. Some other things to look out for; don’t park your car beneath a tree. Not just to avoid falling limbs, but also the falling ice that can crack your windshield and dent your car. For tips on how to deal with power outages and downed power lines, Click Here.
