Dame Meg Taylor Nominated to Become First Woman to Lead the Pacific Islands’ Forum Secretariat The Prime Minister, Hon Peter O’Neill CMG MP, has confirmed the Government’s ongoing support for Dame Meg Taylor to be selected as the Secretary General of the Pacific Island’s Forum Secretariat. “Dame Meg Taylor is an eminent community representative and would be an outstanding Secretary General if selected by our Pacific Island partners later this month,” Prime Minister O’Neill said. “Dame Meg is an inspirational leader who understands the challenges that confront our region. “As the first female Secretary General of the Forum, Dame Meg would also set an example for girls and women around the region to reach for their goals and aspire to their dreams.” The Prime Minister said Dame Meg Taylor has four decades of distinguished experience serving the people of Papua New Guinea, and the region and has gained the respect of civil society, business, academia and elected leaders. “Dame Meg served Chief Minister and then Prime Minister Somare as Private Secretary and was Papua New Guinea’s Ambassador to the United States. “Over the past fifteen years she has served as Compliance Advisor Ombudsman in the World Bank Group. In this role Dame Meg has worked diligently to ensure accountability and provide recourse for communities affected by projects undertaken through the International Finance Corporation. “Despite her achievements, Dame Meg remains a humble and down to earth person, which is exactly what the forum needs in the role of Secretary General.” The Prime Minister has written to and spoken with the Leaders and Foreign Ministers from Pacific Island states and said the reception has been positive. “The decision is in the hands of the governments of our partner nations and I look forward to their decisions when Forum leaders meet in Palau later this month.” Dame Meg Taylor holds degrees in law from University Papua New Guinea, Melbourne University and Harvard University, and was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2002.
