Damien OConnor and I were given permission to cross the floor to vote in favour of a govt bill which permits extraction of wind blown logs on West Coast conservation estate caused by cyclone Ita. The bill was passed under urgency tonight. Bottom line, Damien & I are local MPs for Te Tai Poutini and were supporting much needed jobs and economic opportunities. Disappointing the govt didnt listen to opposition parties concerns and proposed amendments re: process (I.e. done under urgency & no select committee) and ensuring work and jobs would be assigned to West Coast firms etc. But nevertheless it is a welcome initiative for the Coast which has been hit hard by job losses recently particularly in coal mining etc. acknowledgements to our Leader and caucus colleagues in allowing us to vote as local MPs in support of our West Coast communities. stuff.co.nz/national/politics/10205194/Coast-MPs-cross-floor-on-timber-bill
