Damnit...thoughts bouncing all over the place. I popped in on the landlord today, politely asking for a possible date that he would be coming to do the repairs that Iv been verbally requesting for several months and then on 9/2 gave to him in writting. He bluntly said Ill let you know when I finish reading it. wait...what?! it was a 1 page, hand written letter, 100-150 words maybe, highlighting 4 major issues within the apartment (within the apartment that he gets rent on time for every month). So I started to list the items and he cut me off telling me to Go away, before he got mad. Mad??? mad is a mother putting bandaids on her childs toes because he slipped in the puddle the refrigerator has been making for months and nearly ripped his toenail off. Mad is a woman who measured how much hot water Im paying for each month to watch it dribble down the drain. (67+ gallons every 24 hours...Nimo must love landlords like this!) But I kept my cool and asked Bob, are you mad that things are broken?? and he flips it around with: Oh! and when were you going to tell me about the cracked window in the livingroom? honestly, I did crack a window a little over a month ago. I didnt realize that the single pane glass was loose in the frame and when I hit it with a fly swatter, going after a housefly, the pane did crack. I assumed that was my job to repair since I broke it. But by him openly stating that he was aware of it now has me curious....just how many times has he been in my apartment while I wasnt home, and for what reasons??? I walked away from him...not wanting to start an argument that I wasnt prepared to back up with facts. but now iv spoken with my father (he always has a cool head and good advice). my father recommends that I contact code enforcement & the health dept. I was contemplating putting a stop payment on my rent check but I want to do this all by the book (so as not to forfeit my $925 security deposit). So I guess my only 2 options at this point are to either: 1-put up with the issues, or 2-call codes and start looking for a new apartment. Neither was what I hoped would happen by writting everything down for the landlord. I wasnt trying to be confrontational by giving him the letter, I was simply trying to get a resolution to issues that are getting ignored month after month. I know once Codes and the Health Dept get involved it will be more costly for the landlord and it will DEFINETLY earn me a 30 Day notice to vacate. Damnit, happy birthday to me.
