Dan Leger examined some very pertinent questions in his column that appeared in yesterdays Chronicle Herald. The answers should disturb anyone who shares a genuine concern for democracy. Among other things, Leger noted that the Harper Conservatives want to change the law, supposedly to make it fairer than the previous one. They are pushing their changes through with little debate, restricting hearings at the committee stage and curtly dismissing all suggested amendments. But what interests, you might well ask, will benefit from this putative improvement in election fairness?
