Dan Welch: Here is something that puts it in perspective: full disclosure, Im married to an African American; we have a son who is constantly joking--a sort of gallows humor--about how he might not make it to his 20th birthday. You know.. ha ha. This is the kind of joking that goes on in black and brown families across this country. Were not saying dont kill our children *unless you have a good reason,* dont kill our children *unless we get a good explanation,* or *unless he was doing something wrong.* Its not a matter of civil rights, its not about voting--it is a matter of pure survival. So we cant back down.
