Dance step/name misconceptions!!! Just a food for thought. As a practitioner of dance....I know that there are certain steps that we can directly attach to a certain person who may have come up with the concept or have borrowed it from something else and brought it into their respective genre, and I also know that some things just didt have a name. You also have to take into consideration that in what we want to call HIP HOP dance there are many forms which have their own distinct histories. Lets also not forget that these dances were done by YOUTH. With that being said, this is a clip (which mentions this move Bill Bailey does towards the end) of what people know of as the MOONWALK. In which most peoples favorite beloved dancer/performer/musician Michael Jackson came out and claimed as the name for that particular movement. Going back to the YOUTH statement. Most moves/steps that were being done were given names by young minds that associated the move with the way it looks. Spin on your head - HEADSPIN. Spin on your back -BACKSPIN. etc.....they wouldnt think of some deep name for a move, it was pretty much what it looked like. This move demonstrated here is actually called the BACKSLIDE. which has its own properties and is done also in different directions which then becomes a FRONTSLIDE...these terms also were interchangeable with GLIDE. The actual MOONWALK, is a whole other movement that demonstrates a more float-like feel as if you were actually on the MOON!! For anyone with any sense...you simply cannot do a BACKSLIDE on the dang MOON!!
