Dancehall, whatever that means, has taken over Zimbabwe - TopicsExpress

Dancehall, whatever that means, has taken over Zimbabwe music-sphere by storm and overtaken traditional genres like sungura etc. Reports say sungura musicians are finding the goings tough in face of this onslaught. Youthful voices are blaring from many a speaker around the country. I must admit, the pictures coming from recently held dancehall awards where Kambuzuma chanter Winky D ruled the roost, show the dancehall musicians as snazzy dressers, they look dapper in their suits and various coiffures. Forget about the messy appearance always synonymous with this bunch. One report say, at one show it became a contest of what- do- you- drive as these chanters alighted from their mercs etc . However someone once said you can take the man out of the bush but you cannot take the bush out of the man the awards were marred by violence when some Mbare hooligans threw cans over what they thought to be unfair adjudication process that saw Winky D bagging most of the gongs. That said I found the dancehall bunch hopelessly low on commonsensical lyrics but long on vulgar. Three or so songs I had the misfortune to listen to where extolling the virtues of grass, pot, or weed take your pick. Now what do you think these pot heads are out to teach the future leaders? Well if the lyrics are not dissing someone they are suggestive, with women,no less, contesting for honors on this score. I found seunononga song distasteful. A secular rendition to pastor Charambas song machira chete by King Shaddy left a very sour taste in my mouth , this is the height of lack of creativity . It reminded of Jamaican Elephant Man who was in the habit of remixing any song King Shaddy is making it a habit and he will not get away with it. Killer T one of the dancehall stars is said to be on his way to UK for show something that was never in his wildest nightmares. Well music pays doesnt it? You dont have to agree if you musnt ! #saturday musings#
