Dancer Day! George Balanchine’s father was a composer, so Balanchine had an understanding of music at a young age. He attended the Mariinsky Theatres ballet school in 1914, and studied music as well. After coming to the United States, he co-founded the American Ballet and the New York City Ballet. He was also the artistic director of the New York City Ballet. George Balanchine choreographed for Hollywood movies and Broadway musicals. He made more than 465 works, which have been performed by almost every ballet company in the world.
