Dances of Southern Iran Southern Iran is a region bordered by the Persian Gulf and moves inward away from the coast toward more arid landscape. The inhabitants of southern Iran believe in “ZAR,” and ancestral ceremony of “healing powers” designed to purify the body and mind. The ritual consists of bringing the participant into a state of trance. The practice involves an intense dancing involving magical powers with draws strength from the earth bringing the body into a state of ecstasy and release and for the listener the music creates within them a feeling of elation and unspeakable joy. The techniques of the dancer involve vibration of the body made in regular movements where each limb accompanies the music in a very distinct and accurate manner. Also the dancer claps their hands adding to the movements musicality that is precise defined to augment the rhythmic trance.
