Dani Deahl and Jai Sephora brought this article i posted a while ago back to my attention today. I thought about it a little deeper and I think there are some strong correlations with its findings and the current Beatport chart juicing controversy. Maybe artists/labels juice (buy their own tracks in order to get higher charting positions) because they have to in order to compete in a market that is most likely decided by social phenomena rather than an individuals true blind taste? It also got me thinking about active listeners vs passive listeners and how maybe the majority of music fans are passive in the way that this study finds to be true? On top of that, I would love to see this study taken further to see how many people would actually buy the music they rated highly in the scenario that was socially influenced vs the scenario that was blind taste. Deep thoughts with Blakers. mackcollier/study-popularity-is-determined-more-by-peer-pressure-than-quality/
