Daniel- #1- December 7th- 646 words- Today we are going to begin our study of the book of Daniel and perhaps continue right on into the remaining minor prophets, that complete the old testament. Most of these books are short but contain a wealth of information on right living and much to do with the second coming of Jesus Christ. We have studied the book of Revelation a couple of years ago, and a great deal of what we learned there, brought us right back here to Daniel and some of the other minor prophets. I fear, in a good fearing way, that our study of Daniel will invariably lead us right into much information in Revelation; but I dont want you to get tied up with a Revelation study, because that will not be our primary study, but will still need to be brought to the forefront in our Daniel study as the two of them are closely related. Not only will Daniel take us to Revelation but you will see a mixture of Joel, Micah, Zephaniah, Zechariah and Malachi woven into the story as we proceed. Daniel was a captive who was taken into Babylon, and was subject to the rule of king Nebuchadnezzar and king Cyrus in his latter years. Because of Daniels royal, or princely descent in Jerusalem, he was trained for palace service under the rule of Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel was a contemporary of Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Joshua and the high priest restoration of Ezra and Zerubbabel. Daniel gives us an indispensable introduction into New Testament prophecy, which include but are not limited to, the apostasy of the church, the manifestation of the man of sin, who is Satan, the great tribulation, the rapture and return of the Lord Jesus Christ and the judgments of Revelation, mingled with a little bit of tribulation judgment. But, Daniel is distinctive as being the prophet of the times of the Gentiles. Daniels vision sweeps the entire course of Gentile world rule all the way to its end in catastrophe, and the setting up of the Messianic Kingdom. The events of Daniel that are recorded here in his book, cover a period of about seventy years. We will begin today looking at verse one, chapter one, at the personal history of Daniel; In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it. The book of Daniel opens, simply, by stating a fact, that Nebuchadnezzar came against king Jehoiakim, the king of Judah at Jerusalem, and captured the city and the people. This was a short little war that ended in victory for Nebuchadnezzar. Lets look on at verse two, And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god. Now, we need to see something here, right off the bat about Nebuchadnezzar: we note that when the Word of God, Jehovah God, the one and only true God, we see the name of God begins with a capital G, denoting diety, while the god of Nebuchadnezzar is spelled with a little g denoting Gods contempt for Nebuchadnezzars god. These little things are those which we need to pay attention to when reading or studying the words of God. Capitalization is important for us in determining when the bible speaks of Diety and when it only shows normal people, places or things. Another example is Spirit versus spirit with the capitalized Spirit meaning the Holy Spirit or as it is sometimes referred, the Holy Ghost. Until tomorrow, Lord willing, we will continue on our new path of study. God bless and keep each of you. Pastor Joe Raulerson
