Daniel Levy and Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez had direct talks on Tuesday in Miami, where the Tottenham chairman is holidaying and the Spanish team are on tour, but there was only limited progress in what was their second set of negotiations. Perez slightly upped his initial offer to £86million (€100million) but Levy reiterated his valuation of £104million. Either fee would shatter the existing world record transfer fee of £80million that was paid by Real Madrid to Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009. The issue of Madrid players being included as part of the transfer was also raised but, Pérez remains reluctant to include Spain Under-21 international Álvaro Morata in any deal. There are also differences between their valuations of of Madrid players. Levy, though, will only do business if he is satisfied that the Spurs squad would be improved by any deal and is mindful that money in the bank will be of no use on the football pitch next season. That is why he has been interested in Morata, one of the outstanding young players in Europe, being included in any deal. Levy has also already sanctioned significant spending this summer, with Toulouse midfielder Étienne Chapoue about to join Paulinho, Roberto Soldado and Nacer Cahdli as another incoming transfer. Madrid have been in Miami over recent days for last night’s International Champions Cup final against Chelsea while Levy has a home in Florida. Tottenham had previously indicated that they were not willing to hold further talks unless there was a significantly improved offer and the next step is now unclear. Levy is renowned for being one of the toughest negotiators in football. His willingness to again speak with Pérez, however, appears to suggest that he is ready to sell at the right price.
