Daniel Ramskov shared this delightful video on the page. This is the Norwegian Junior National Team working on core strength and stability in various functional ways that are very swimmer beneficial. The beginning of the video is very basic, but very crucial. If swimmers start doing core work early on, such as sit-ups and crunches (raw abdominal strength), activation of certain core muscles may not be targeted. Therefore, swimmers should start here by focusing on abdominal bracing in order to trigger these muscles to fire in synchronized fashion. Once this is mastered, one can safely progress further. One thing that should be taken from these exercises is the lower back, which is emphasized in the video. Simulate the movements so that the body is as close to the water motions as possible. Swimmers need to avoid excessive lordisis (curvature in the lower back) – that’s where the exercises in the beginning of the video come in handy. Functional gyms, such as the one presented in the video should be main focus for swimmers. It makes me happy to see that a nation takes their elite athletes and applies safe and swimmer friendly exercises for them to perform. *Note – some of the streamline exercises are advanced and should be performed with swimmers that show solid upper body strength and no signs of shoulder injuries.
