Danielle spent most of yesterday in a dopey sleepy happy daze, enduring the relentless questions What is your name?, Show me a thumbs up, Could a five-ounce bird carry a one-pound coconut? etc etc. During the morning she would mostly look at the inquisitor with a look that said Are you insane? but she gradually began answering the questions and sticking out her tongue and wiggling her toes. She cannot move her right arm or leg yet, and cant feel touch below the right knee. As she gets better, shes starting to realize shes immobile and you can see the frustration in her eyes. Last night she woke me up with a wail and said, I cant get in the car! Not sure if it was dream but it was her first sentence, and she later said I need to go to the bathroom which is always useful information. She started yesterday eating some ice, then water, then jello, custard and broth, so we skipped the Swallow Test and got mashed potatoes and turkey and soup. She handled it with no problem. It was weeks before she ate solid food last time around. She had her first speech test this am, which starts simple and gets a bit more complex. She did way better than she did last year, and when given one minute to name as many animals as she could, she shows a definite preference for the Canid family: dog, raccoon, coyote, wolf. The therapist remembered us and praised her for a much more rapid progress. Occupational and physical therapists are headed to her today as well, and theres been a steady parade of staff all morning which is why this post is mid-morning, and Ive still got to cancel our plane tickets to Germany today but so far its been a snipe hunt.
