Danny Welbeck needs to be more like this Arsenal legend, says Scholes. Danny Welbeck made his debut for Arsenal yesterday but missed a big chance with the game at 0-0 - leading Paul Scholes to say he needs to be more ruthless. Arsenals biggest test of the season so far came today as they faced reigning Premier League champions Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium, and the 2-2 draw was probably a fair result as Martin Demichelis late header prevented the Gunners from clinching all three points - but it could have been so different. With the game poised at 0-0, new signing Danny Welbeck latched on to a misplaced pass. The new £16m signing from Manchester United scored twice for England in midweek, and a goal on his Arsenal debut would cap off an amazing week for the 24-year-old. The storyline was written, the headline writers were licking their lips. One on one with Joe Hart, Welbeck had the chance to give Arsenal the dream start. But he missed. Not by much, but he missed nonetheless. Welbecks pace took him away from Vincent Kompany and Martin Demichelis, and he executed the deftest of deft lobs over England team mate Joe Hart. The ball was heading for the net - or so it seemed, as his shot came back off the post - and with that, the chance was gone. City went on to take the lead and whilst Jack Wilshere and Alexis Sanchez scored to put Arsenal in front, fans were left to wonder what couldve been had Welbeck scored that chance. During his time at Old Trafford, Welbeck had received a reputation of being a striker who needed three, four or five chances to score just once - and todays miss wont have done him any favours from that perspective. And now, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says that Welbeck simply isnt ruthless enough in front of goal - and that former Arsenal hero Ian Wright wouldve scored that chance, which is what separates him from the best in the Premier League. When the big chance comes he didn’t take it. I think it’s to do with ruthlessness, Scholes said on BT Sport. It’s the part of the game he needs to improve. He’s not a Ruud Van Nistelrooy, he’s not an Andy Cole and they would have put them away no doubt. Ian Wright would have put that away.
