Dantian Rolling with Tha-Mula Bandha: Techniques to Enhance the Flow of Blood and Lymph Through the Internal Organs and Throughout the Entire Body My previous post discussed how a technique called Tha-Mula Bandha can make forward bends safer. Today I want to introduce the technique of Dantian rolling and how it can be combined with Tha-Mula Bandha to make forward bends not only safer, but also to enhance blood and lymph movement through parts of the body where they normally don’t move very well. In Chinese body technology the Dantian is considered an important energy centre located in the abdomen about 3 cm below the naval. Rolling the Dantian can be achieved by waiting until the end of exhalation and then briefly and gently pulling the lower abdomen back towards the spine and then letting it go again right away upon inhalation. This creates a flow of blood and lymph from the base of the pelvis up the back of the abdominal compartment, which then flows forwards through the chest and down the front of the abdomen on exhalation. It is performed to improve blood flow through the internal organs to massage and nourish them. In Chinese Body Technology this is considered essential for health and longevity. Dantian rolling can also be used for the purpose of improving blood flow in the bones. Recent research has observed that blood flow to the marrow region of bones deteriorates with age (Thompson and Towler, 2012). The Daoist (Taoist) longevity technique designed to improve this situation is called “bone marrow washing”. I will discuss this more in a future post where I will also talk more about the person who taught me Dantian rolling and bone marrow washing, Zhen Hua Yang. References: Thompson B. & Towler D. A.
