Dapur sup My friends Sara Sukor and Dylan Jefri Ong help out at a soup kitchen (Need to Feed the Need) - they provide food for the needy once a week. My friend MamaTom AJ and Wan Rusli Wan Muda at Yayasan Kemanusiaan Muslim Aid Malaysia help the orphans, refugees and other marginalised communities day in and day out. My friend Syed Azimal helps out the needy in Kuantan. My friend Tini Zainudin work very hard to give a better life to street children. My friend William Cheah commits substantial amount of his time helping out the poor. I am not able to name them all but there are thousands of Malaysians like them who selflessly contribute their time and money to help the needy (you know who you are, bravo). . . These good samaritans do what they do because there is a need. There are people out who need help. There are people out there who are not yet able to make a decent living. There are people out there, due to circumstances, are forced to rely on help from others. So my friends like Sara, Dylan, MamaTom, WanRusli, Syed, Tini and William play a very important role in our society. They fill the gaps where the government is not able. They compliment efforts of the government. They reach out to communities that the government cannot. . . So the whole issue of Tengku Adnan making a unilateral decision to ban soup kitchens from the city centre is rather silly. Soup kitchens are not perfect but they are done with good intent and they provide benefits to a large number of poor people. If Tengku Adnan has specific issues, then he need to engage with the soup kitchens to explore ways how to improve. The soup kitchens and other NGOs are helping the poor and they are doing the government a great deal of service. You cannot simply wake up one morning and decide that they are a nuisance. Tengku Adnan, the soup kitchens are your friends. Talk to them, work with them. They help to make the country a more compassionate place. . . With or without the soup kitchens, the homeless will be homeless. Unless Kementerian Wilayah has a solution to the problem, I would strongly encourage the Minister to work closely with the soup kitchens and numerous other NGOs who work very hard to make our country more humane.
