Dar City Center - DCC - Increased Candida Infections Worry Medics at Soroti Hospital Medical workers at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital are concerned about the alarming Candida infections amongst women. Dr. David Aderu, an Obstetrician and Gynecology specialist at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital says seven out of every 10 women who he examines daily in the maternity ward in Soroti Hospital suffer from Candida infection. Candida is one of the common infections in women. It presents with extreme itching in the vaginal area, soreness, redness, white clumpy vaginal discharge that looks like cottage cheese leading to painful intercourse. The infection is also common amongst uncircumcised men. It presents with a red rash on the penis and Itching or burning on the tip of the penis. Dr. Aderu advises against self medication. He says left untreated in women Candida, can lead to infertility, vaginitis, unusual odors, painful menstruation, cramps, menstrual irregularities, pre-menstrual syndrome and swelling of the vulva. Sister Jennifer Opolot in the Family and Planning Unit Soroti Hospital says 255 women out the 277 who turned up for cervical cancer screening in November last year had Candida. She attributes the rise in infection to poor Hygiene and re-infection by their husbands. Sister Opollot notes that, most men shun Candida treatment saying it is a sickness for women. Candida treatment in private clinics costs between 15,000 and 20,000 shillings. Emmanuel Ecaku, who operates a drug shop in Soroti town, says he charges patients between 15,000 – 20,000 shillings depending on the level of infection.
