Dare 2B Daring – January 19, 2015 A daily devotional published by Risk Takers for Christ, Inc. (Permission granted to reprint with proper attribution.) “No one served God by doing things tomorrow.” – Charles Haddon Spurgeon Last week, I used Leroy “Jethro” Gibbs as an illustration in one of my devotional messages. This week, I want to use another popular character from N.C.I.S. to make a point… and a spiritual application. His name is Dr. Donald Mallard, but he is known to Gibbs – and to N.C.I.S. fans worldwide – as “Ducky”. He is the chief medical examiner for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service headquartered in Quantico, VA. Ducky is portrayed by British actor David McCallum, who rose to fame as Illya Kuryakin, a Russian secret agent, in the TV show, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” The program was aired from 1964 to 1968, and it made McCallum an international star. In fact, I can remember playing a board game modeled after the TV show when I was a youngster. Which brings me to the point I want to make. How can an actor who was a child during World War II; attended acting school with Joan Collins in the early 50’s; and appeared in such films as “It Happened One Night” (1958) and “The Great Escape” (1963) still look so young? Can you really believe that David McCallum is 81 years old? I sure can’t… but it’s true! My point is that no matter how young a person looks on the outside, there is no cheating Father Time. People have tried throughout the ages, from Ponce de Leon and his quest to find the mythical “Fountain of Youth” to celebrities like Michael Jackson and Bruce Jenner, who disfigure themselves in a futile attempt to appear forever young. Someday, the “Grim Reaper” will come calling for every one of us, so that begs the question: How Should We Then Live? That was the title of Francis Schaeffer’s classic Christian treatise, written in 1976. Because of the importance – and timelessness – of the question, Chuck Colson penned a book with a similar title in 1999, “How Now Shall We Live?” Do you know Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior? If not, trust Him today. And if you are already a Christian, are you living each day to its fullest for God? If not, you’d better get cracking – or should I say “quacking”! “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment.” Hebrews 9:27 (NKJV) - Rev. Dale M. Glading, President
