Darjeeling Orphan Brutally Trashed, in ICU Follow >>>>>>> Bangalore: Abuse of 13-year-old domestic help blows the lid off growing trafficking Bangalore: The abuse of a 13-year-old girl as a domestic help in Bangalore has blown the lid off of many well-educated, high-income families trafficking young girls and boys from North India as house helps. On August 9, 2014, a 13-year-old was rescued after she was brought to hospital with severe head injuries. Her employers, an entrepreneur and his wife, both educated and earning a high income, are now in police custody. In April, another minor girl near the Electronic City was rescued from her techie employers who had allegedly assaulted her. In January, social workers rescued a 12-year-old Jamshedpur native working in North Bangalore. These shocking incidents show how Bangalores nouveau riche have been bringing in young girls and boys from their native states to work as house help. These children are often ill-treated. Over the last year, there has been a steady rise in distress calls to the Karnataka child rights commission. Umesh Aradhaya, Chairman of the Karnataka Commission for the Protection of Child Rights, said, When IT and BT boom is there in Bangalore, we are coming across this. Where the husband and wife are employed and they hire child labour to do their domestic work. The 13-year-olds case was the third in one month in Bangalore. When child welfare officials visited her in the ICU, she told them she was beaten up almost every day and she was fed only once in three days. She was assaulted for taking bread without employers permission. She is malnourished, it is very sad. Only because of a small issue, they beat her up badly, tied her hands and legs, said Anita Shivakumar, Chairperson of Child Welfare Committee. One wouldnt expect such petty behaviour from well-educated, GenX techies, but that is exactly what is happening. Children who have been rescued often recount horror stories of being beaten up, not given proper food by their employers. Efforts are on to trace the grandmother of the orphaned child. Police say special monitoring will be taken up on the larger issue of child trafficking.
