Darjeeling police to continue raids and arrests in hills: (Gorkhaland- India) ****************************************** All shops in Darjeeling and Kalimpong downed shutters following the news of Garg’s arrestr. Darjeeling police will continue raids to nab people involved in criminal cases in the Hills to keep common people in peace. According to police records, more than 200 people are involved in crimes in the Hills and they are still at large. The Inspector General of police, Mr Shashikant Pujari, said police have arrested more than 1,000 people following the list of wanted criminals in the Hills. Of them, police arrested some persons just to take preventive measures to maintain peace. “More than 200 people are still wanted according to police records. To maintain peace, police will act at an appropriate time observing the situation in the Hills. Many common people were happy when police arrested several local hoodlums, who used to attack on common people, from different areas,” Mr Pujari said. Reacting to police arrests, the GJMM president Mr Bimal Gurung in his Facebook post, said that he was shocked following the state’s attitude as its police arrested innocent people on charges of criminal cases. Mr Gurung has also condemned the role of the state government for unleashing terror in the Hills. The IG, north Bengal, Mr Pujari, said: “Police have not yet arrested a single innocent person during the raids. None can give an example of police atrocity in the Hills till date.” In order to maintain peace, law and order in the Hills, police can arrest any person on suspicion as preventive measures, police officials said. Recently, police arrested two persons and seized foodstuff and huge cash from their possession preventing them from supplying foodstuff and cash for the GJMM during the bandh.
