Darn, going to miss all the St. Patricks celebrations with the Irish prime minister in D.C. Knock on wood that our officially-elected 24/7 co-host and guest, Joe Biden, will be at them all. Hes working overtime Friday, though its too bad his boss turned very cautious on improving the overtime lot of potentially millions of workers. You might have read, via White House leaks, about all those many millions who can earn as little as $455 a week and be classified as white collar by their employers and exempted from OT rules. Those might include your basic convenience store manager. Word was passed that, as part of his frustration with a do-little Congress, Obama might unilaterally change those rules over at the Labor Department. That could have meant just hiking the weekly threshold. But, ah, no, hes opted for discussion and dissection and promulgation of tentative new rules, then more discussion and dissection after that. Its all part of the regular bureaucratic process of so-called rulemaking that can take years. This did not seem a profile in courage, especially as he pushes so hard against the prevailing political winds for a hike in the minimum wage. Anyway, its all part of todays D.C.
