Darnley Island: In the Window This week whilst we are in between exhibitions we have on display in the Pieces of Eight window a collection of Ghost Net weaved vessels from the Darnley Island Arts Centre. We are proud to present this body of work which has been created by the Torres Strait artists of Erub Erwer Meta (Darnley Island Arts Centre). It is the result of a series of cross cultural workshops with Melbourne based artist Kate Rohde who travelled to work directly with the artists in 2013 and 2014. This forms part of a bigger project run by Pieces of Eight director Melanie Katsalidis in conjunction with writer/publisher/curator Emily McCulloch Childs to upskill indigenous artists via a series of workshops focused on jewellery making and will result in a major exhibition in 2016. The works have been made using reclaimed abandoned fishing nets supplied by Ghostnets Australia, an environmental initiative in Northern Australia which works with indigenous rangers and communities. The pieces are all unique and exclusive to Pieces of Eight. piecesofeightgallery.blogspot.au/2014/11/darnley-island-in-window.html
