Daryl Hall was born on this day in1949. The singer/songwriter as part of the duo Hall and Oates has had 6 number 1 singles in the USA. In 1980 Robert Fripp joined Hall on his 1980 solo album Sacred Songs! Yes, an odd pairing indeed but this album is “must-have” for both Hall & Oates and King Crimson fans! In some ways, this is a missing link album between Red and Discipline.. The vocal approach applied by Greg Lake to John Wetton was fairly similar but the difference between Wetton to Belew is very broad indeed. On Sacred Songs, Halls vocal approach sits beautifully between the two. Fripp has been quoted as feeling that this album was part of a trilogy along with Fripps Exposure and Peter Gabriel II. Listen to those two then this and it is easy to see how. Sacred Songs presents a Hall with Balls, barking out the lyrics to tough songs, nothing like the “yacht rock” soul that comes from his work with Oates. The later released CD package includes a few tracks from Fripp’s “Exposure” LP. This rekid has the hallmarks of post punk no better exhibited on You Burn Me Up, even though it sound like old time rock & roll, then there is Babs and Babs, and NYCNY, especially. These balanced by the beefy rock ballads scattered throughout, like Why Was it So Easy, Survive, and Without Tears. The LP took 3 years to release, who knows what the record company was thinking, maybe they didn’t want to put Hall & Oates fans offside with this edgy recording. 8.5/10 https://youtube/watch?v=089SH63fiSw
