Daryl J. “Shorty” Nieman, 85, of Nortonville KS died unexpectedly on Thursday, Oct. 24th, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital, Topeka, KS. Funeral services will be 10:00 am on Monday, Oct. 28th, 2013 at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Nortonville with Rev. Michael VanVelzer officiating. Burial will follow in the Nortonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, Oct. 27th, 2013 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Matthew’s Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Condolences and memories may be left online at beckerdyer. Daryl was born on March 12, 1928 in Nortonville, KS. the son of Julius G. and Ruth E. (Thompson) Nieman. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School, Effingham in 1946. Shorty was a farmer for most of his life. He was an active member of the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, having served as President of the Congregation, and on many boards and committees. He was a member of the Lutheran Layman’s League, Atchison County Livestock Board, had received the “Farmer of the Year from Atchison County Farm Bureau. Mr. Nieman was a former Walther League Youth Group Leader and 4-H Leader for the Lucky Clover 4-H Club. He enjoyed playing cards and attending the Senior Citizens in Nortonville and especially spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Shorty was married to Emma Lou Mier on May 6, 1956. Emma Lou survives of the home. Additional survivors include; a son, Bob (Theresa) Nieman, Klamath Falls, OR., two daughters; Patricia (Beaver) Kearney, Atchison, KS and Penny (Mike) Linscott, Effingham, KS. Eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and his dog, Rudy. His parents, a son; Jerry Wayne Nieman, and sister Roberta I. Pyne, preceded him in death.
