Date: January 16, 2015 To: NWI Press Agencies From: Chad Bogue, Division Chief of Turn Operations RE: Residential fire with entrapment At approximately 12:45 p.m. the Portage Fire Department was dispatched to the 1200 block of Camelot Manor on the city’s southwest side for a mobile home fire. Upon arrival, crews found charged black smoke throughout the mobile home with flames coming from the rear and neighbors stating the homeowner was still inside. Crews made entry through the front door where they encountered hot, thick and heavy smoke. After a few minutes of searching the interior crews found the elderly homeowner in the living room of the mobile home. The man was brought out of mobile home by the fire crew in cardiac arrest with burns to the upper portion of his body. The man was transported to Porter Regional hospital. Enroute to the hospital the man’s heart started beating again. Upon stabilization by E.R. staff, the resident was flown to a hospital in Chicago for care of his injuries. This evening fire department personnel remain on the scene investigating the cause of the blaze. They are being assisted by the Portage Police Department and the State of Indiana Fire Marshall’s office. The department was assisted on scene by the South Haven Fire Dept. while Union Twp. Fire and Burns Harbor Fire Dept. covered calls in the city.
