Date: July 12 Location of the day: Murren and Lautenbrunnen, Switzerland So a little pre-Switzerland information: When we were planning our trip for Europe, there are certain places in which I wouldnt let myself have high expectations, in fear of being disappointed. For England and France, I had heard so much about them and everyone told us how much we would love those countries (especially France), so I didnt know if they were places that were overrated and I would just be disappointed if I had my hopes up too high. So I had my guard up a little bit. I ended up loving both places even more than I thought I would and was so happy with those experiences. Well, I dont know why, but for some reason, I didnt do the same for Switzerland. Instead, I had these grand visions of being engulfed by the Swiss Alps, with majestic and breathtaking views. I had huge expectations. Last night when we arrived, the sky was clear with the stars sparkling and the moonlight showing the tip of the mountains. I was so giddy with excitement that I didnt sleep well because I couldnt wait to see the view in the morning. When I awoke, I jumped out of bed, opened the curtain, and saw... FOG! We were completely engulfed in fog! I felt I had been punched in the gut. Trying not to let it dampen my spirits and hoping that it would burn off, we got dressed and went to breakfast. While at breakfast, there were tourists there who said they had been there for six days and it had done nothing but rain and they had yet to see the mountains. That was when I cried. . Trying to stay positive, we rode the gondola up to the highest point in the area (supposed to be the best view in all of Europe), trying to get above the fog and see the beautiful view of the Swiss skyline. We get to the top and see... FOG. That is when I cried for the second time. After some tears and hugs, we decided to take a funicular(cable train) up the mountain and do some hiking. We did manage to get some good views when the fog would break apart for some moments, but still wasnt exactly what I had envisioned. But on the plus side, it was a killer workout and leg burner! After the hike, we took a 10 minute train (and them a tram) to the valley below to a little town called Lauterbrunnen. Down in the valley, the weather was a little better and the valley was clear, but the sky above with the Alps was still blocked by the fog and clouds. But we were able to get some good pictures of the valley, so Im glad for that. After that, we went for an overpriced dinner with bad service and crabby waitresses in the pouring down rain. But I did not cry for a third time. It can only get better, right? Thinking of the positives: * our town of Murren is quite lovely and is quinsissential Switzerland. * Forecast for tomorrow looks slightly better. We were told that the best views are in the early morning and then it clouds up quickly. So we will wake up early and see what its like. It its nice, we will go up to the top and try again. If not, I dont know?? Cry? Mondays forecast doesnt look good, but Tuesdays (our last day) looks the best of all. If I can get just half a day with good views, I will be happy! Bummer of the day: weather! Fog and rain blows! Why do I feel like Im cursed with bad weather? The bike trip keeps going through my mind... Theme of the day: Disappointment! Pat said it best when he said my face said it all: Your spirit has been crushed and your heart has been stomped on. Food and drink of the day: trying to go with the food & drink of the country- really good yogurt for breakfast, Swiss chocolate for snacks, and cheese fondue for dinner (very good, even though people were crabby and it was overpriced). Wine for drinks- which in my mind, goes with any country. Tomorrows agenda: everything is weather dependent.
