Date of Detection: July 20, 2013 Current Size: 21,800 acres Location: 10 miles West of Challis, ID Containment: 63% Resources on Fire: There are currently 567 personnel on this incident, including the following resources: CREWS TYPE 1 HELICOPTERS (HEAVY) TYPE 2 HELICOPTERS (MED.) TYPE 3 HELICOPTERS (LIGHTS) ENGINES DOZERS WATER TENDERS 10 3 2 3 18 3 6 Remarks: Yesterday, active runs were observed in the Twin Creek drainage. Crews used aerial resources in the Pats Creek area to slow the fire’s progression and enforced the indirect line established in the Morgan Creek drainage. Field observers also completed scouting a viable path where direct suppression actions can be pursued in the White Valley Creek drainage. Throughout the duration of the incident, fire managers have taken multiple approaches to manage this fire aggressively, yet provide for safety first in all activities. After waiting for the right conditions, firefighters have the opportunity to use direct handline along portions of the northern flank, heading west towards the 2007 Shower Bath fire scar. Aviation resources will provide support to the northern flank of the fire to slow the progress and allow the crews to safely complete the mission. The shading effect caused by smoke from nearby fires is expected to reduce radiant heat and assist firefighters as they begin to flank the northern perimeter of the fire. Given the long fire history on the Salmon-Challis National Forest, this tactic should slow the fire’s growth, but will not put the fire out. The hard work done to establish indirect line along the Morgan Creek drainage in preparation for a black lining operation remains in place and will be used in the event the fire reaches points that would trigger the need for a burnout operation. A red flag warning for gusty winds, low relative humidity and a chance of dry thunderstorms is in effect today. ### Closure Area in Effect: Emergency Area Closure Order Number 04-13-13-553 and went into effect August 9th to provide protection to forest and BLM visitors from current fire safety hazards.
