Dates are the third largest horticulture crop grown in Pakistan with an annual production of 550,000 to 650,000 metric tons (MT). The commercially important date varieties grown in Pakistan include Aseel, Karbala, Fasli and Kupro of Sindh province; Muzawati, Begum Jangi, Jaan Swore, Kehraba and Rabai of Balochistan province; Dhakki and Gulistan of NWFP province and a mysterious seedless variety of Punjab. During July and August, when the date palms are in full bloom, dates growers, due to lack of modern scientific and technological facilities, use spiritual methods as preventive measures to save crop from monsoon rains.
